Stocking 56 gallon, 5.8 foot, tank

Hello, I am looking to set up a 56 gallon, 212ltr tank. (length x width x height Inches — 69.69x12x15.75, cm — 177x30x40 approx)

This tank is not pre-drilled, and will be effectively on the floor (due to the height of the stand it is on) so unable to do a sump beneath it. However, as this stand is 15cm/5.9" wider than the tank, I will be able to fit hang on back refugiums. These should give me some additional space for equipment as well as space for macroalgae hopefully.
The stand is also 30cm/12" longer than this tank so I have room for an ato.
I do understand this will massively limit what stockings I can do. But I am likely going to stick with smaller fish anyway, ones I originally planned for the 90cm tank I intended to do.

This would be with a sand bed of around 1 inch of live sand (partially to keep weight down), and a mixture between dry and wet live rock initially.
Looking at roughly;
18kg or 40lbs of sand. Special grade possibly also with aragonite mixed in.
25kg or 55lbs of rock.

Any corals for the tank are likely to just be zoes and softies. I currently have a viperspectra, however this is only 3 feet long, not 5.8, so I'll need to get additional lights as well for it.

I make my own saltwater as I have an RO/DI unit. Instant Ocean salt.

I am wondering what would be suitable for this tank? Especially considering I am still reasonably new to keeping saltwater tanks. The fish I am looking at and have liked follow (most of list originally done for a much smaller tank);

These are fish that I am interested in. Fish in higher are those I am more interested in, those in lower I am less interested in (maybe due to something I am uncertain on, like aggression or health). The numbers in the brackets are about how much I like the fish and how likely the fish is to move up to the next category, 7 or higher are those very likely to move up.

The jawfish is a 9, a very high rating, but not moving up because I am going to be adding a pearly to my other tank and not sure about having one in both tanks.

I don't know whether the eels are actually likely, due to wanting these smaller fish that they might see as snacks. Also whether the width of the tank would stop them, even with their noodle soft curling up.

Please feel free to suggest fish, or reasons for fish to change categories, as nothing is set in stone. I am struggling to also work out what sort of numbers I could do for this tank, as it is not like the little nano I was originally planning. For instance, I think that Tomini Tangs are small enough for this tank from what I have read, but I am not sure whether the width/depth of this tank would be fair for them.

Fish that I know I am not interested in, no matter how many have tried to persuade me otherwise.

This is not 100% going to happen, as I have a family member who I live with that is determined it will not get into the house to the stand without shattering. But that is not stopping me planning at least.

No, only a few. Which is why I said about how nothing is set in stone. These are fish that I like, and are interested in, not the set plan.

At the moment, there are no 100% going to go in the tank fish. I understand I'd get less than a quarter of those fish if that.

It is not a plan, but fish I like and are interested in. A question of whether those fish could work in this tank, anyone's experience with them or whether anyone else has any ideas on the fish.

Take the eels off the list. Tank is too small for one, especially since you cant have a sump for extra filtration. They have a very large bioload. With this size tank I would say 7-8 (smaller) fish max, and only do one blenny, blennies dont tend to like other blennies. I personally would take the mollies off the list. I have 3, one is annoying as heck to my fish in my 300 and I have a breeding pair in my smaller tank. So many other fish that are prettier. The only reason I have mine was I had a lion who needed live foods at first.

Great, thanks. I had a feeling the eels were to come off, but they were begged on by a family member who wanted a fish big enough to tong feed or a "proper" fish.

Ok thanks, yeah, it would have just been the one blenny (excluding the scooter), I just don't know what one.

You recommend against the mollies? Is it due to their looks or are they very much nippy/aggressive like some other livebearers? I know they need to be in groups to keep them a little better as the do better that way at least in freshwater. It was due to their "shoaling" and constantly being out personality that I was looking at them.

If it was my personal tank I would go with;
1. Possum Wrasse - These are adorable and will just scavenge the rocks all day
2. Silver Belly Wrasse - These guys are great for pest hunting around coral
3. Fairy Wrasse - These guys are always a good choice for colour, one thing people don’t always love about them is how the back of their dorsal moves as they swim
4. Goby/Shrimp Pair - I couldn’t recommend a better symbiotic relationship, I love watching them as the Goby is the eyes and the shrimp is the housekeeper! I know they’re slightly more expensive but I recommend a Yasha Goby.
5&6. Pair of Flaim Scooter Blennies - Again, excellent pest hunters especially for flatworms but their personalities are just incredible.
7,8,9&10. Barnacle Blennies - These do best as a group and hey, why not go for a quad, their personalities again are incredible.
11. Purple Firefish - Simply as a good showpiece species, I have a Lavandula in my nano and I love her colours.
12. Blue Assessor Basslet - I know you listed the yellow but honestly, I would go for the Blue as when backed by coral they’re gorgeous (plus yellow is coming from the Silver Belly).

If you can’t tell, I’m a huge wrasse addict (I have a whole 5’ 180G system dedicated to them). I absolutely adore them and they often make a great staple in a reef system.

5&6. 100%. I've had a pair of pink scooters before the pistol shrimp killed them and I love them. And it was certainly a love at first sight for the flame scooters. As long as introduced together with this size tank they should get along well being 1 male 1 female. This plan with it being a ?x was when I was planning a smaller tank, 35gal which then changed to a 29gal, and I was worried about pod population.

7, 8, 9, and 10. This is 50/50, as I might actually end up doing a group in my other tank which I am closer to. Which allows me to watch them a lot easier for their little quirks and personalities.

11. I've heard they feel more comfortable as a pair? Would that be more suited for the firefish?

Great, thanks for the reply. Yeah, that is why I specified a Randalls in my list. I brought a Randalls, turned out not to be one and was eventually guessed to most likely be a Alpheus sciolii or A. djeddensis. I currently have it living in my pest/aiptasia tank.

So if I buy two together at the same time I might have the chance? Sounds that I will likely only be a single then unless the lfs does actually get in more than one at a time of the purples.

Alright, thanks. So having plenty of sight blocks, caves and hiding places I might be able to chance having both basslets as long as I see about adding them together?

With the engineering goby I hadn't realised just how long they get. Somehow in my head I thought they were 6" maybe 8" most. Not the actual width of the tank. So they're out of the picture.

Look into chromis, they school or zebra dart gobies, they also school. Closest in salt! And yes one of my mollies is super nippy, he wouldnt leave my clowns alone and was fighting with my other male (who had already claimed the female) and now he is nippy with my sleeper goby in my 300 gallon tank. Dudes got a huge tank but stays right under the goby all day. Annoying fish. My two breeding pair keeps to themselves. They are dalmation mollies, and I loved those in freshwater. But all of them have turned almost all black since converting them, not sure what that is about. Only reason I still have them is because I want to try and raise their babies to sell to one of my LFS for credit. Way more saltwater fish that are cooler and prettier than mollies. And the x10 you wanted would probably max you out, these little boogers poop ALL THE TIME.

Yeah I would just take them off the list honestly. And I had a trio of chromis together for a year and a half. Only have one now because my picasso trigger went nuts and started killing them and other fish. I need to get him some more buddies. Of course they can fight, mine never did. A trio of royal grammas can also work, colorful fish but they like the rock work. Unfortunately with the size tank open swimming fish are limited because the majority of them need more swimming room.

Only have one now because my picasso trigger went nuts and started killing them and other fish. I need to get him some more buddies. Of course they can fight, mine never did. A trio of royal grammas can also work, colorful fish but they like the rock work. Unfortunately with the size tank open swimming fish are limited because the majority of them need more swimming room.
