I say full speed ahead! And if we spoke in person i would egg you on and encourage you further. Just take lots of pics and videos so we can all live vicariously through you. If you can keep that 320 healthy and be successful, why would your skillset not scale further? I mean if you were jumping from a 20 to a 320... that is different, but at some point bigger tank just means bigger/more equipment and larger maintenance budget.
LOL, I decided that with this upcoming build, it'll be my last. So I'm going all in, size wise. For me it's only a 203g tank, as my house, while 1900+ sq. ft., is a series of small rooms (with the exception being the kitchen). Do what makes you happy dude. We get one shot at life and you may as well enjoy it to its sustainable max.

I have started recently thinking that I could go almost to the wall with the same dimensions giving me roughly 12 ft by 3 ft by 30 in tall. I have a wife that always says yeah. You should do that when I have crazy ideas. So, there is no needing to ask for permission or anything like that.
I even went so far to get a quote from custom aquariums and Joe over at glass cages. Glass cages is much more reasonably priced for those looking looking.
The thing is, everything's going so well. Why would I want to do that to myself.
Current system see I could go from the chair all the way to the wall.

I assume if someone asks for permission is because they share finances, both people work and share a bank account. That it's not really asking "permission" but just having a chat about spending a chunk of money on it.

If I could get it all done for south of ten grand maybe I would. Something about going above that, gives me pause. I'm thinking it would cost between that and 12k.
Also, there's the stress of taking down the existing tank and having to keep livestock alive in tubs. The tank must go in the same position because on the other side of the wall there is a shed where all of my equipment lives.
I think we have reached the point in the thread where you have revealed your inner struggles with the amount of work and effort, besides the money that should make a sane person pause. Tank lifting and temporary housing for your current critters and mixing water and all that stuff is a huge task to undertake if the current tank isn’t leaking.
Put the money into stocks and donate a tank to the local community and help out with that one and leave your own alone until it’s leaking and you have too do the heavy lifting.
Don’t complicate your life with unnecessary distractions from enjoying what you have.

Well that's sort of it. Also the size equals more daily expense and do you get 10k more excitement or is it diminishing returns at some point.
My wife ask me what happens in a few years when there's nothing to do on a new bigger aquarium, what will I want to do then. That's a really good point.
Set up a second tank. I couldn't tear down a tank that looks as good as your current one.

Reefers with a long term tank are often looking for a new challenge, but that new challenge does not need to be a bigger tank. Maybe a smaller one, maybe very small, perhaps looking to get a set of creatures that are more challenging or can’t go in that tank.

I have the same kind of wife. She’s the best, but man she doesn’t help control me either. Last New Year’s Eve we were at dinner and I asked her if we should go buy an electric guitar and drum set. She responds, “hell yeah!” So we literally walk into guitar center when they’re closing and load up the car with drum set, amp and Gibson electric guitar.
Six months later she wants to get a few fish for our daughter. I ask if we should do saltwater. Boom. Done. Water box 110 secured. Last month I ask if we should upgrade to a 7 footer next year. She says, why wait? Lolll. Patience my dear.
Seriously though. If you know you can handle to water changes then it really isn’t much more maintenance besides making changing more water. If you know you’re up for it. Do it.

At some point just beyond 300 gallons I'm told that there is a need to put a fair amount more into the life support system for the creatures and system. You do you as you write your aquatic adventure. Personally, I went with multiplication of tanks instead of ever larger replacement.
Yeah, well, I need it. Left to my own devices, I'd buy a bunch of stuff I don't need. Because of her, we've got a car payment (that'll be paid off in a few months) and a house payment (which will be gone in 3 years -- we just started in with triple payments). No credit card debt. All of this because I ask permission!

Definitely can relate. It is nice to have lots of food in the fridge and no debt sometimes instead of tons of new stuff. Lol, need someone to keep my feet on the ground while my head is in the clouds.

I have a big tank already, invest in a new hobby! Here r some ideas:
Photography, rc cars/planes/boats/Helio, fpv, making models, model trains, model rockets, planted tank? Mountain biking is awesome, road biking, terrarium amazing, paladariuj building, sketching, art, music, idk, but DONT GET IT
