In my experience moorish idols and all fish for that matter should be treated right away with hyposalinity first and if necessary cupramine. I lost to many fish in the past especially idols to not have a dedicated qt.

If you want healthy fish, you have to treat them.

My 2 cents, good luck!

Saltwater is INDEED more difficult. There are more disease and lack of eating prepared food. I have lost a lot of money already.
However, when I do succeed, I get rewarded with a tank full of pretty fish. That is what makes me happy.

I agree that we aren't getting the best quality fish recently.
One way I have increased my success is only buying fish that have been at the lfs for a long time or from hobbyist who have kept their fish for a long time.
If you want something from the petstore, pay a deposit and pick it up a couple weeks later.

I have not had any success with any online retailers livestock who seem to use the same source.

What are you talking about. Saltwater is not difficult. I’ve had freshwater and it was much more easier and less expensive with equipment. Cichlids can pretty much live in brackish water. I don’t think most LFS care how experienced you are or how long you been in the hobby. There in the business to sell fish, equipment and make money. LFS aren’t run by hobbiest who care.[/QUOT

Alternatively you can try similar looking fish such as red sea bannerfish, heniochus, masked heniochus etc.

I have the red sea and non fish keeper cannot tell them apart.

I like that Red Sea banner fish, but why dbl the price and some from the Moorish? It’s easy to keep compared to the Moorish.

Its still not super easy to keep but much easier to keep than Moorish idol.

I recommend to wait for one that has been kept for a while. When they come shipped as a group, some don't make it in the beginning. The ones that do eat will live for years.
Its expensive because they are overcharging but also because they are only from the red sea.

However, I would make sure your system is clean before starting

Have you tried a fresh water dip? Set up a hospital tank and quarantine them for at two to three weeks.

Good luck..

I just don’t have the time, experience or knowledge to qt. I’ve read many threads where people are losing fish in qt too. Now I know why I never wanted to get into saltwater. I knew it was way more difficult than freshwater. Saltwater is very frustrating.
I’m sorry but this statement is just ignorance especially when you’re on this form which literally has thousands of posts on how to QT property and even cheap simple bucket QTs which cost next to nothing to set up compared to what you paid for that fish. It’s only frustrating when you don’t take the steps and precautions necessary to maximize the fishes chances of survival. Either take this as a lesson learned for future fish purchases or continue to beat yourself up and blame the hobby as being “too difficult”

Yeah that sounds real stress free and beneficial to a fish . stuff them in a 5 gallon bucket for 30 days or longer and pump them full of chemicals.

Clearly you have no intention of tackling your problems with any solutions and instead remaining close minded and rebutting with everyone on here. I think #mods should just close this thread and you sir who are so concerned with the stress of the fish just leave them in the ocean ( because in all reality are fish ever truly 100% stress free in a home aquarium) or leave them in the LFS for a responsible fish owner who does his research and does everything he can to keep a fish as healthy as possible

I didn’t read everyone’s replies but I’m pretty sure no one is calling you ignorant or anyone crappy owners but when you post on the forum asking about the condition of a fish and they are telling you what needs to be done but you are refusing to take someone’s advice or keep giving excuses then yes you are being ignorant to the fishes needs. Stop taking everything defensively and read about the hobby. This hobby spans far greater than 20-30+ years so there is a TON of wealthy knowledge and certain things can be mitigated. We are trying to help you not attack you
