SHRIMP!

Immediately after being transferred into the display, my pair of Blood-red shrimp are getting harrassed for a cleaning lol. They hadn't even had the chance to explore the tank or find a perch yet! These were acquired in 2019.

Bought a couple of Scarlet cleaner shrimps because they are must-haves for me.
Med-sized $75 for the pair.

Paired and perched. One is carrying eggs, so the tank will get some healthy "treats" shortly.

Panhandling for Gold!

The tub is about ready to be shut down now. Scooped out some gunk from the bottom. Time to go panhandling!

Here's some of the gold I got!

Had a healthy population of these Nassarius snails, hoping they re-establish themselves again.
That are a lot of snails.

Looking good! Could you tell me how thick of glass was used for your external overflow box? I need to make something similar for my tank. Thanks.

doing the unconventional cycle with ducks!

Tanks not big enough for that many ducks. You should only have 1” of duck per 25 gallons.

Dosing.

Calcium has been hovering around 400. Have the Vertex CaRx going at 1 bubble/sec and 60ml/min, should get my Ca up in no time.

Have decided to try my hand at carbon dosing, going with Vodka and starting off at 10ml/day dispensed at noon, cuz hey who doesn't like day drinking.

I guess when I go to do any maintenance downstairs I can reward myself with a shot too.
Need to set up a doser with some good stuff, not this cheap stuff hahaha.

The floors were reinforced when the original tank went in.
3 x laminated wood beams were added, signed off by a structural engineer. If I recall I think the plans only called for 2.
We were doing renos, so it was a now or never moment for a large main floor display tank!

20200820_104328.jpg

here you can see the beams in the basement ceiling, along with 4 x 1.5" runs, 3 for drains and 1 for return.

As for stocking, I've always gone mix reef and this will be the same. Sticks are awesome, but so are rics, and zoas, anemones, clams and fish! All are welcome!
That photo made me think of a question as I go down my own path of a basement equipment/sump room. Do you have any noise from the pipes? Do you insulate them in any fashion to reduce potential noise. I really have no idea if this is a concern, but don't want to build our house and then find that I can hear the water moving through the pipes 24/7. thx

Hey,

FWIW I do not hear the noise of water running in the pipes. I just ran downstairs into the basement to double check lol. As can be seen in the pics, the pipes run in the floor below the tank (ceiling of the basement) and do not have any extra insulation.

And that is a very good question to ask. Definitely something to consider.
