These posts come up a lot and I can see why but at the end of the day the onus is on all of us to understand what "our" limits are to build a successful and thriving system. Personally I treat a few things in my tank similar to my scuba diving hobby which I consider the life support system. Tank - because fish/coral need water, return pump because I need flow and oxygen, and power with redundancy in case something happens we have oxygen. Fish and corals can do without lights (think mother nature storms) but I need those other things to survive the storm
Everything else is what I consider luxury items similar to a car. You want to go to the store for a gallon of milk? A pinto will work just as much as the Shelby GT 350, right? The other parts of the tank is where you choose much like what you keep like fish and corals. So yes - I could probably swing a Gem Tang or say a Clarion Angel but alas it isn't something that I personally set has a goal and it exceeds my threshold for fish. Instead I have a Lt. Tang and Coral Beauty. Limits. Similar to my car hobby (HPED events) - I wanted to buy a GT350R but at the time ADM was super high so instead I ended up with a GT/PP. It is about choices much like life.
In any case some things are expensive I agree but it is what it is and no different than buying a watch or rc airplan or a bottle of wine...
