Once we define how lfs, tank movers, reef conventions, tank upgrades all happen without awaiting the new cycle then ways of starting new tanks emerge that dont follow old wait rules. then we have to accept the new ways since they drive so much economy, and practice in real life.

forum posters never take time to discern the status of the rocks being used (or transferred from one tank to another already cycled)

all forum posters know is dose ammonia to anything you add, wait 2 weeks-1 month and begin, if you have no nitrite.

the real world isn't working that way, only forums.

Case example
no article on cycling discusses skip cycling. We are told by all authors that we cycle ANY rocks we bring home.

Im interested in how todays microbiology is changing things and retro-explaining how lfs, conventions and skip cyclers have successfully broken hardfast rules for two or more decades now.

This is very broad strokes as far as topics are concerned, but I’ve been reading a bunch of old salt content. And I find that I agree with their focus on the biological rather than the technological. I suspect that’s because I’m a product of a medical family, and also due to being such a big picture-everything-is-interdependent-spectrum that I’m a trained philosopher and could tell you more about history that you’ll think it’s awesome (coincidence, man made choices, etc)

Anyway, I feel like if more newbies like myself looked at their tank as a complete ecosystem rather than chasing individual numbers, or viewing the uglies as individual crises rather than part of the path, we’d have more people sticking around.

Wise one you are padawan!

Thank you. Seriously. I’m a newbie who is still working towards my build. It’s taking me a ton of time. But I’m trying to use it to learn and come up with a good game plan. Beyond that, there’s always the delicate topic of being new and weighing in to such discussions.

So again, thank you. Your sentiment means a great deal

You know what I want!!!! I want more open and transparent communication from the big leagues!!! What are you guys working on! Who is putting honest to goodness effort into captive breeding what?!? How are those endeavors going? What can the community you already use as beta testers for your merchandise help with so we can no longer be beta testers and more liken to actual end users! What breeding project are currently only in the theory stages, so we know what to look forward to! I spend a lot of time hunting down this kind of information! I’d love to see it here! Now! At my fingertips on R2R!!!

Do zoas have seasonal die off? I've experienced great growth and die off for about 10 years. Certain types seem immune to the die off but are also very slow growers to begin with.

Agreed. You are wise beyond your “years” in reefing. Seek knowledge, don’t follow the latest trend, or infomercial video. Nature can handle 99% of a reef tank’s problems. Cures in a bottle are a temporary band-aid, not a solution.

Maintaining a reef tank without quarantining is the information I like to read about.

Also, when people ask about identifying things on their fish bc I would like to know these things and what things are normal.

@BeltedCoyote Boom git er dun to you both!! Understand the theory of what you are trying to accomplish...from a chef understanding a vinaigrette is an acid and a fat, then you can make whatever...Reefing is way more intense though lol

thats an interesting topic because all claims there go directly against a PhD MACNA speaker and I have no qualifications to do so. What I do have is about one thousand work links, though. I can make cases based on web patterns, and cycles don’t stall in reefing.

my secondary interest is the massive sales machine that benefits from redundant bottle bac sales. We are told that cycles can stall, and that causes sales. Interesting feedback loop.

no reef cycle has ever stalled, not one. Send me any online post of a stalled cycle and we will prove it’s not stalled by clues in their description. The animals in the tank will be acting normally. We will also predict what test kit theyre using before we know for sure. We will also list what test kit they aren’t using, based on their reported param levels, also listed will be the exact date they can begin reefing without any losses.

Ill believe a cycle has stalled the day we get a poster trying to put fish in an empty aquarium with no rocks and no wet caribsea sand and no bottle bac, just a raw drop into the water. That can stall and kill the fish once the dilution is used up. In twenty years of online reefing I’ve never seen that once, even from a noob

the slowest a cycle will run incorporating common surface area is the time set by a common cycling chart. None go longer, unless it’s api or Red Sea saying so. It will never be a seneye claiming tenths ppm nh3.

across the entire internet and in every book, cycling is at max a thirty day event, for fifty + years or so now. If cycles stalled, we’d have some longer cycling charts to consult they’d have found the variation sooner in wastewater treatment plants and water purification facilities

its only our hobby using nine dollar testers making the claim

I am wanting to learn about the ratios of PO4 to NO3. Seems like there is ratio that works really well for coral growth and coloration and still inhibits nuisance algae. Low numbers are not that important maybe. I would also to find information on how to help maintain those numbers and ratios.

Sounds like a thread you should start now and we could give it some social media love! PM me the link if you decide to create it!

Beneficial bacteria.

How to promote the good bacteria? What is the best way to introduce bacteria? What kind of work can bacteria do?

Noted and good topic!

How much food do fish really need?

This is something I ALWAYS struggle with! Too much and you get algae, not enough and you get unhealthy fish and sometimes algae! HA! Added this to the QOTD list!

DSBs and making them work in a mixed reef (i.e. finding the flow sweet spot/style than can support everything and not make the tank a dust storm)

Added to the QOTD list!

@revhtree I couldn't resist.

Well played, well played!

I always loved the looks of these..

What will the prices of livestock and supplies level out at during and after the epidemic. Though prices on most dry goods haven't changed much, the price of live stock has skyrocketed due to shipping cost and such. I am curious whether or the the prices will return after we finally get back to normal.

How many reefers have actually upgraded their tank. We all say we are going to, but then we see how much it cost to upgrade and usually think twice. I am currently in the process of upgrading, and I see how much more it cost to go custom and buy all the top tier equipment.

Considering how much has been written/studied regarding alleopathy ( chemical inhibition of one coral (or other organism) by another) on the natural reef, why isn't it more commonly observed in our captive mixed reef aquariums (especially in systems with no mechanical/chemical filtration)?

The question has been asked for two decades now and we still don't have a definitive answer.
