As some others have suggested, I used smaller rocks and epoxied some of them together. I tried to keep it minimal and half of the tank height or less, so that the coral will fill in the tank, rather than the rock. The 12" tank height really requires smaller pieces with this approach. I'm just starting, but really happy with it so far.
