Why not just siphon out sand while doing water changes. You can always add new sand later. Just make sure the new sand is rinsed "snow globe" clean which takes forever. Or you can clean your old sand this way too. There's plenty of bacteria on your rock to handle your tanks load with no sand.

This is a good idea.
