The effect is indirect and second-order. Pods and live phyto combine to out-compete the uglies and create a nutrient lock that can then be consumed or skimmed/filtered out. It's not that they have to eat it; it's that they make what they (Uglies) need unavailable.as you can see phytoplankton, as in single cell algae. They do help some but won't touch macroalgae like hair algae.
