The reason for the care removing the rocks on the sand

Is one has no idea what is in the sand

One knows that is going to be anoxic, at best you will be disturbing hydrogen sulphide into the remaining water

The rocks, free of animals, can all go in fresh made salt water. That doesn't matter

The livestock should go in the uncontaminated-with-hydrogen-sulphide tank water for transport

Agree 100%

Care should be taken when removing the bottom layer of rocks. And we should have all livestock removed at this point - inverts corals fish etc in tank water for transport

Plain rock can get new water at the new home and with only a 30 min trip you’d have minimum die off but you can take clean tank water to keep it moist in transit

And when removing the last layer of rock be on lookout for any snails hermits etc that could have fallen and are now on the sand, take the rock out slowly to keep the water clear for visibility purposes, and also to keep it from becoming toxic to any livestock you might have missed. If the owner has nassarius snails you can also drop in some food and they should come out looking for it and then you can grab them

And that response was a response to an earlier post

Ok let’s do it your way and ignore the fact it’s part of a linked conversation

Work fast removing the rock to stir up the sand bed as much as possible. Leave the pumps on so you have 600+ Gph of water shooting out the lockline adding to the detritus storm. You don’t need to see through the water

Work from bottom up

Toss any loose corals on the bottom for later. Tackle the hardest bottom rock first. Also those rocks with gsp and coral attached. Transport them dry

There is no need for this. Lift it fast and don’t worry about the water. We are in a huge rush for a half hour trip. We can’t be taking our time to be neat. Oh and you won’t need to be able to see through the water at this stage to make sure you aren’t scooping any snails (nassarius esp) or crabs into the trash with that old sand.

So you said none of this is necessary. See how that works?
You wasted to much time and energy trying to talk sense into that guy, better off just to ignore people like that, some people just have to complicate the simplest things

Talk sense into me? The man contradicted himself so many times, I left the conversation. If he wants to help others complicate things, so be it. When all of the animals are out of the water, I don't see the need to coddle a sandbed that will be thrown away. Apparently, snails can't be found with hands.

Everything I said is wrong. This guys an expert. Been in the tank moving industry 15 years. On the forum for 10. And decided out of all the people asking for help moving tanks over the years and all the bad advice that’s been given in those help threads that he would chime in on this one to say everything I say is wrong or that my steps are eccentric or confusing to a new person. Maybe your clients are senile and can’t follow instructions but I don’t think my simplistic steps are too difficult for op or anyone to follow. You don’t give people enough credit and shame on you for assuming that they arent smart enough to understand

1) remove and bag corals with tank water
2) remove rock and transport in coolers, bins, whatever, with tank water
3) catch fish with large net and bag with tank water
4) drain remaining water. You won’t need it
5) After all rock and livestock and excess water are removed, scoop out sand and dispose of it. If you can carefully take a few cupfuls off clean sand from the top, you can take this and transport in a couple ziplock bags. This would be to seed new sand

Wrong wrong wrong! All wrong!

Lord forbid that I suggested he try to minimize dirtying the last few inches of water as he removes the bottom layer of rock. What a tragedy that would be. Better fight over the internet about it.

The reason for removing all the rock is to catch fish easier. If the bottom layer of rock is in there the fish will hide in it and behind it, complicating the process and increasing stress on the fish. It’s easiest to net fish in an open and empty tank.

You may have your own preference on how you do things but that doesn’t invalidate mine

Just put him on ignore. He's just arguing to argue

I have moved a 40B. It was a lot of work

And did everything I wrote and you wrote to moved it

With only one casualty, never did find that firefish

Some people just don't like other people for no reason at all. Ignore

Her husband was an engineer. I’m sitting here like Uhhuh. Rocket ship. I usually run minimal equipment so this be nuts.

Holy lord the aptasia and pests are insane but I can handle that.

The sand is actually clean, they have engineer gobies that shift it around, it’s the glass that’s gross.

SO how the hell do I detach the sumps on this giant behemoth

How did things go? I was considering this one on fb marketplace too. I just didn't want the livestock.

It went. :grinning-face-with-sweat:
It’s still going.
Story time, skip if you don’t want to read.

I originally told the fam I wasn’t going to do it. Too much work when I had a good look-I could tell it was going to be a headache. but mom really put on the pressure.
I got there around 3, my fam showed up around 5:30/6, and we finally got out there about 8 pm I believe?

In the end, breaking down the tank- the owner, a wonderful woman who has the kindest soul- helped me remove all rock, coral, and livestock. Showed me how everything worked, even included the auto-top off and a full RO/Di Unit… bless her soul she is so sweet.

All I had were my brother, sister in-law, and mom. We went up like two flights? of stairs Idk it was a weird curving staircase around a corner. Across a massive house- nothing broke or dropped. (Success!)

-Tank and equipment is still in shambles; I have the livestock chilling in a garbage bin along with the nems.

I am working on this tank Every. Single. Day. until I have to leave for work, and an hour after I get home before bed.
It is So. Much. Work. I’m hoping it’ll be very rewarding in the end when I get to stand back and admire all the time put into it.

((And mind you— I’m a girl, in my 20s, and I’m doing this by myself :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
Sometimes I have to wait for my dad from work (to move heavy things) to get home before I can make progress.))

I’ll post some pictures. Got some very depressing/upsetting news, but I’m trying my best to tackle this project head on.

— I am cleaning the rocks up.
Bleach, hose down, bleach soak, scrip- peel— everything. Then letting them sit in the sun.
They’ll be seeded with live rock from KP and TBS

I got rubber mats today to lay down over the floor for under the tank.

Hoping it’ll be put together and running this week, next week, fully finished.

You’re climbing the hill and breaking
it down and moving it is the hardest part and now it’s in your home! Cleaning and setting it up is the next hardest part. Lol. It’s all hard! But every step is a step closer. It will look great once you have the sand and rock and life back in!

Inspiration pics! Think of what this tank could look like some day! The effort now is worth it! It will be so rewarding to pick out stuff you like and come home and relax looking at it. You’ll take pride watching them grow also!

The stand looks great! And a surprise! Engineer gobies?!?!

Are you using new sand?

This will come out great and we will virtually help!

Thank you!!! I love my gobies so much I really just want them to live through this process. They’re so stressed right now in the garbage bin- hang in there!

I do have new sand, currently only have 45 lbs, going to see where that puts me before I look at more.

And wow those corals are GORGEOUS!!!!
I’m hoping starting from scratch will let my tank control freak self have a torch coral dream come true :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:
