Funny how the anonymity of the Internet makes people go bonkers online, when they'd never be so bold as to have these kinds of interactions faface-to-face.
Not me, I'm just as straightforward in person. Haha

I think that stems from 20 years active duty military. There's no time for beating around the bush.

Yep, some people would much prefer to get back behind the keyboard once they realize who they are actually insulting. The internet is a funny place.

I see your point, and it has some merit. I'm just going to say that my understanding (and Mods please correct me if I'm wrong) is that being a moderator here at R2R is a tough, and largely thankless, job. I just don't see logistically how they would be able to vet everyone. I mean, would there be a questionnaire? Could such a questionnaire not be spoofed by, I don't know, Chat GPT? Would a staff member of R2R have to go visit each person and observe their tank? Is having a tank even a requirement for participating here? Again, good idea, I just don't see how they'd do it :)

Someone earlier mentioned a "downvote button". Also not a bad idea, but I know that people will get downvoted just for having a difference of opinion, not necessarily a bad idea or post. And that I think leads to people not wanting to share ideas and different points of view.

Badges, I believe, are a good indication of someone's background and knowledge. Certainly, all of my badges I got by either purchasing a supporting membership, welcoming new members, carving a pumpkin, and playing Santa Clause. Clearly, no one should take me for any more than an active R2R user, not an authority on anything. But when I see users post with badges like "Expert Contributor", "Moderator", "Excellence Award", "Article Contributor", "Fish Medic", etc., I pay very close attention. So I think some of the vetting you're asking for is already baked into the R2R cake, so to speak.

I once mentioned to Rev that it might be a good idea to begin a mentoring program. If a member wanted to mentor newcomers to the hobby, they might message Rev expressing interest in doing so. Rev would then reply with a questionnaire that would have been assembled as a collaboration by moderators. The questionnaire would be completed and returned for review. If the applicant passes muster, this would be indicated in some way on their profile.

You wouldn't have to screen everyone, only those interested in applying. And, I'm not sure what you mean by "spoofed" where a questionnaire is concerned. I mean, I understand spoofing an email or phone number, but how or why would one spoof a questionnaire?

People work from home, so I don't see the need to go to a person's home to see their results. Pictures and video could easily do the same.

And yes, I do think a tank should be a requirement. Participating here without a tank would be the same as participating on a boating forum and not owning a boat. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

A down vote button would be helpful, but giving everyone access to such a button would also give users the option to down vote when they take something personally, even if the response they take personally has merit.

Badges are eye-candy. They carry little weight in my view. To repeat my example, there are people here with 150k reaction score, but most of that is the result of a pretty picture in a "welcome" thread.

As a salt water forum, I want information on salt water subjects. I'm not interested things like "Excellence Award" as I find it ambiguous. Excellent at what? It tells us nothing about the users skill set. The same is true for a "Hospitality" badge. Sure, you're a nice person and that is important to me because I don't like mean people. But you can be a nice person and still provide wrong information.

So I think badges can be considered, but they would carry less weight in the decision process than a targeted questionnaire would.

But none of what you mention is a valid for assessing the quality of information coming from a given user.

This is why a separate and new grading system would be required.

And the beauty of it is that you can choose to use the vetting or not.
I think this is a discussion better placed in its own thread. I’m not understanding how one is to be labeled as vetted or whatever you’re proposing without some sort of label or marking for us to see. “A separate and new grading system would be required”….? I’m interested to see where you take this….just think we’re veering into a different lane here.

Behind the wheel of a car is another locale that brings out the troll in people. Driving a car or sitting behind the keyboard seems to relieve humans of being social animals, you know, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it all.

Out of how many times? I've found it to be a fairly good jumping off point for further searching, especially when I doubt the correctness of the answer it gives.

With obvious differences?

Badges or forum bling shouldn't be factored into the decision process of a hobbyist. Same is true with post count or membership date.

I understand it is but maybe that is one reason why there is such a high turn over rate in this hobby.

OK, I thought you wanted to have Reef2Reef vet ALL members, which would just be impossible for them I'm sure.

It's actually worrysome that "overviews" or "summaries" are taken as fact. Keep your salinity right, and test other stuff occasionally, lol.

I am not sure it is much different than someone recommending something they haven't used and only recommend it because forum activity or answers.

Having said that I guess it really comes down to what year we are born in and the generation influence it has over us. What used to be face to face via community user groups and books has since changed to social media, bots, and memberships.

Maybe chatgpt isn't the answer today but as the data it has access to grows it very well could be in 2 or 3 years. Just as spice is the most precious substance in the universe (Dune reference) or water on earth data is chatgpt's precious substance. Anyone awake can see it being collected be it a medical test, record, or something put in ones favorite search engine...

The levee broke - no stopping it now.

I'm too thick to contemplate this statement. If I ask it to translate DIY Randy's magnesium additive from gallons to metric, why does it gimme a different answer every time?
