Holy crap... I just tested my tap water this morning with a TDS meter and it read 579....

I know our water is horrendous but wow based on the other responses here I am alarmed..

Hmm now I am slightly worried. In Boston I am reading 1 ppm into my BRS RODI and of course 0 ppm out.

Starting to think it is a false reading... Any way to check that a TDS meter is working properly? I know Randy is nearby and has an in reading of 100+. Thoughts?

I do have a "salt" water softener, does that have anything to do with it?

If you have a dual inline TDS meter is is probably hooked up with the IN probe after the RO and the OUT probe after the DI so you are not reading tap water TDS, that is just one downfall of the inlines among others.

A TDS over 500 is not at all uncommon, it can get over 1600 in the Phoenix Metro area depending on location. Mine is between 560 and 830 and still no problem for the RO/DI. If you have softened water that is a very good thing since membranes love softened water, kind of like pretreatment for them.

MWRA water is around 90-100 ppm TDS, if that is your source.

Is it an inline meter?

Mine was 580+ last time I checked. I didn't check to see how it varies throughout the year. We just got a water quality report and it failed a lot of categories. They were blaming in on all the rain and runoff we had recently.

Yeah its the one that comes on the BRS RODI units. Dual inline meter is the description from their site.

Well, something is wrong with it (or the place it is connected) if MWRA water reads less than 10 ppm prior to the RO membrane. As I said, it is closer to 100 ppm, both by my readings and by their reported values (about 95 ppm TDS sent to Boston).

Levittown, Long Island... reading 37 TDS from the tap. Bought one of those portable cheap RO/DI units from Amazon. Not bad, no leaks and 0 TDS, only draw back is 50GPD.

46 the last time I checked, (~6 years ago) but I have been using tap water for about 17 years now without any problems. Go figure...
