Couldnt figure out what was going on. All standard metrics were in line and stable. Got ICP Test results back. See attached. Salinity super low. Which is unusual because I monitor that closely. Turns out my refractometer calibration was way off. Hoping getting this back in line will rectify the situation. Iodine and Manganese were also low. Any feedback welcome.

With salinity, I would make your top off water be salt water and raise it that way. It will slowly raise the salinity over time and will allow for your livestock to get acclimated to it.

So, I had this exact issue and it caused me so many issues for so long (mine was super high tho, 38-39ppt). Imo, get rid of everything (refracto, hanna, w/e) and buy this-

I swear by this, it's SUPER accurate. Just be careful w it, it's glass and fragile. But nothing compares to it (even recently calibrated stuff)

And as others said, bring up sg slowly. I put a glass cup in my sump and let it dissolve into the system.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I thought I was recalibrating my refractometer but turns out the calibration solution was off. Eventually I ended up with a salinity of 38ppm. The corals were super sad and a massive outbreak of cyano ensued. Ended up getting a hanna checker and recalibrate it monthly and haven’t looked back.

I just bought this and it is ready for pickup at BRS! I live in the same city as BRS so that is super convenient. Thank you for the idea!

+1 on the glass hydrometer. Keep it clean and make sure there's no bubble and its virtually foolproof.

There's also calculators online to adjust for temperature as its designed to be used in 77 degree water.

buy a large graduated cylinder off of amazon, I put the hydro into it, then pour water into it on a flat surface. No mess, accurate, and keeps the hydro safe from damage. I think I have a 300ml one, I'll check later today.
